Health Information Management

This 5th grader interviewed Paula.  Paula works in Health Information Management.  Are you interested in computers?  Maybe this is for you?

Q:  What is the title of your profession?

A:  My profession is in health information management.

Q:  What do you do?

A:  I supervise all the employees in my department.

Q:  Have you always worked in this field?

A:  Yes I have always worked in this field.  I have worked in the field for nineteen years.

Q:  Why did you choose this profession?

A:  I chose my profession because I was knowledgeable of computer skills.

Q:  How would you define your profession?

A:  I define my job as managing patient’s medical records.

Q:  Did you go to college for this profession?

A:  Yes I did go to college.  I went to college for two years.  It was an online college in medical management.

Q:  Do you use your degree?

A:  Yes I use my degree to help manage medical records.

Q:  Can your degree be used for any other profession?

A:  Yes I can be a medical coder and medical transcriptionist.

Q:  Are you required to take any continued education?

A:  Yes my job requires five continuing education credits with in AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association).

Q:  Do you have to take a board test or become certified?

A:  No my job doesn’t require a certification or board testing.

Q:  What is the day in the life of your job?  Do you work with the public?

A:  I manage thirty six people to make sure a patient is medically and legally complete and in for the patient care.  I do work with the public

Q:  What do you think makes a person successful in this position?

A:  To be a successful person in this profession you need to be good with people, keep up with Federal and State laws and be able to keep up with technology.

Q:  Do you have to travel?

A:  No my profession does not in require to travel.

Q:  What type of hours do you work?

A:  The hours of my profession are Monday through Friday 7:00am to 4:00pm.

Q:  What is the most rewarding part of your job?

A:  The most rewarding part of my job is passing surprise state and joint commission visits.

Q:  Is there anything you dislike about your job?

A:  What I don’t like about my job are the restrictions from corporate owners.

Q:  What advice would you give to students that are considering this career?

A:  The advice I would give is to study hard in all areas of school, as you will use them in this profession.

Q:  If you had to do it all over again, would you?

A:  If I had to do it all again I would choose the same profession.

Q:  Are you having fun?

A:  I’m having a fun time in my job.

Q:  Do you receive a pension?

A:  Yes I receive a pension.
