Volunteer- Project G.R.A.C.E

My friend Lisa is a volunteer for an organization called Project G.R.A.C.E.   Is there an organization in your town that you can volunteer for?  Get involved!!!  I asked her to tell me about how she got involved and this is what she had to say…

Q:  What type of volunteer work do you do?

For the past 4 years or so, I have volunteered for a variety of events organized by Project G.R.A.C.E. located in Scarborough, Maine.

It is an organization Granting Resources and Assistance through Community Effort.
In particular I have helped with assembling Easter and Thanksgiving baskets for those families in need.  I have also participated in the Giving Tree where we purchase designated items for families in need.  (www.projectgracemaine.org)

Q:  What inspired you to volunteer?

Giving back always gives me a warm feeling.  Folks are SO appreciated of any time I can give.  Who wouldn’t want to carve out time for that?

Q:  Why did you choose this type of volunteer work?

It is an organization that gives right back to my community, so I knew my efforts would be well-received.  There is no long-term commitment. I give when I can and for how much time I can give which works well with a flexible schedule.

Q:  How did you find out about this opportunity?

I am good friends with the Founder of Project G.R.A.C.E. and consequently become good friends with many of the volunteers and sponsors.

Q: How much of a time commitment is it? Is it a long term commitment?

That is the beauty of this particular organization I can offer my time when it is convenient for me.  They are always having events asking for volunteers, if it fits in my schedule I do it, if not, I know that there will be another to follow.

Q:  Do you work directly with the public?

Volunteers do not work directly with the people we serve.  Volunteers work to raise funds, gather donations or participate in activities to help those in need.

Q: Do you have any recommendations for a person that might be interested in doing this type of volunteer work?

For some, volunteering can be an opportunity to “step outside your comfort zone”.  This work allows you to meet new people, offer your talents, and give to those in need.  The rewards are endless.

Q:  Did you have to go to any training?

No.

Q: Was there any type of background check?

No.

Q:   How would a person that is interested in doing this get information about it?

Go to the website, contact the office, or gather some friends and attend event together!!

Q:  What is your favorite part about volunteering?

The fun I have….no matter what it is I am doing……..counting candy for the Easter baskets, coordinated an event for Summerfest or enthusiastically gathering support for the annual Trivia Bee.  It’s ALL fun!!

Q: Are there any requirements? ( do you have to be a certain age, do you need to have a car, etc??)

A positive attitude and willingness to help others!

One Response to Volunteer- Project G.R.A.C.E

  1. I’ve got to say, that is an impressive commitment to a single cause – four years. I’m glad you wrote this article – it puts it in simple terms how you can volunteer – giving as much or as little time as you can or want to. I think many volunteers are put off by the prospect fo lengthy commitments on their time, which they will be unable to fufill due to work and family commitments.

Are you still involved with this charity?
